Not Your Ordinary Wedding: Bride Breastfeeds Baby In The Middle Of Ceremony

One usually doesn't associate wedding ceremonies with breastfeeding, but this case in Montreal, Quebec in Canada isn't your usual ceremony. After all, the bride's crying baby daughter was her priority, so she breastfed her in the middle of the wedding.

Christina Torino-Benton, the bride, applies attachment parenting and only breastfeeds her nine-month-old daughter Gemma, according to Today. Hence, it was only natural for her to breastfeed Gemma, even in the midst of her own special day.

Daughter's Cries Delay Brides' Vows

Metro reported that Gemma started crying as the 30-year-old mother of two and bride began her steps towards her childhood sweetheart, Daniel Benton, who is 32. Torino-Benton's mother managed to soothe Gemma but as Torino-Benton reached the altar, Gemma "became inconsolable."

Torino-Benton sat in the first pew of the Resurrection of Our Lord Church as she breastfed Gemma. "'My dress was very forgiving, thank goodness. I was able to manoeuvre (sic) myself around it, and she immediately settled down," Torino-Benton was quoted as saying. The bride was wearing a strapless wedding gown.

Reactions To Bride's Breastfeeding

Lana Simmons, a photographer, was able to take a photograph of Torino-Benton breastfeeding Gemma in the middle of the ceremony. The bride, who was captured smiling, posted it to a breastfeeding support group page in Facebook, Inside Edition reported.

The page is called Breastfeeding Mama Talk and as of this writing, more than 8,000 have liked the photo. "It's super cool. This is so cool and positive," Simmons was quoted as saying. While there were reportedly some who did not like what Torino-Benton did, a survey of the posted photo shows other breastfeeding brides sharing their stories in the comments.
