'The Last Of Us 2' News & Update: 'Uncharted' Game Neil Druckmann's Key To Ellie, Joel, Success By Naughty Dog? 'TLOU,' Sequel Almost Shelved?

"The Last Of Us 2" gained great buzz from the "Uncharted 4" easter egg. However, the "Uncharted" franchise by Naughty Dog is the key for creative director Neil Druckmann to "The Last Of Us." Without the "Uncharted" franchise, "TLOU" and "The Last Of Us 2" would have been shelved.

Segment Next cites SCPR in reporting that "The Last Of Us" was initially rejected by George Romero when pitched by "TLOU" creative director Neil Druckmann. Instead of "The Last Of Us" by Neil Druckmann, "Dawn Of The Dead" director George Romero chose a different project to support.

SCPR reports that Neil Druckmann, however, refused to give up on "The Last Of Us," even after the concept of the now successful Naughty Dog game was pitched as a comic mini series. When Neil Druckmann went on to work with Naughty Dog and met success with the "Uncharted" franchise, Sony gave "The Last Of Us" creator a "blank check" of sorts.

Because of the success Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann were massively successful with "Uncharted 2," Sony allowed "The Last Of Us" creator to develop any project he wanted. Neil Druckmann then took the opportunity to pitch "The Last Of Us" once more.

His track record with the "Uncharted" franchise gave Neil Druckmann the confidence he needed from Sony. "The Last Of Us" was finally accepted and Neil Druckmann is now on his way to developing the hotly anticipated Ellie, Joel "TLOU" sequel.

Without the hit Naughty Dog series "Uncharted" under his belt, Neil Druckmann may have taken slightly longer to bring "The Last Of Us" to the gaming world. Thanks to the "Uncharted" franchise, not only did Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog succeed in making "The Last Of Us" a hit but also, as E3 2016 revealed, "TLOU" has also redefined the gaming industry.

Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog may bring Ellie and/or Joel back in "The Last Of Us 2." At the moment, the "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" delivery for a single player DLC is the only thing that's keeping Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog from resuming work on "The Last Of Us 2." Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann could target a 2018 or 2019 "The Last Of Us 2" release date.
