‘Penny Dreadful’ Spinoff In The Works: Netflix To Pick Up Series After Season 3 Cancellation?

"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 served as the series finale for the Eva Green-led series on Showtime. Many fans were greatly disappointed that the show had to end abruptly even though series creator John Logan said that he had been working on the ending of the show since Season 2. Will a spinoff provide a more proper closure for the series?

"Penny Dreadful" Season 4 is highly unlikely to happen on Showtime or any other networks because series creator John Logan already made it clear that the show had to end with Vanessa's (Eva Green) death. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Logan stated that he has been planning the show's end since Season 2.

"'Penny Dreadful' is about many things, but for me it's always been about one really simple thing, which is a woman's journey of faith - a deeply religious woman who loses her God and then finds him again," he said.

Showtime president David Nevins also told the publication that he tried to reason out with Logan to try and continue with "Penny Dreadful" Season 4. However, the showrunner and network president came to the conclusion to gave fans and viewers a satisfying ending in the Season 3 finale.

While Nevins and Logan are convinced that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 provided fans with a satisfying conclusion, Wired notes on the reactions of several critics. According to the publication, film critic Theresa DeLucci felt that the show's ending was "very rushed."

Even author Christie Yant said that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 finale failed to provide a conclusion to some of the threads that were introduced in the earlier seasons. This disappointment led to the creation of online petitions in hopes of saving the show for Season 4 or, at the very least, creating a spinoff series based on Ethan (Josh Hartnett) or Brona (Billie Piper) on Showtime or Netflix.
