Homeschooling Parents In California County Told That Homeschooling Was Illegal

Parents who homeschool their children in one California county have been informed that homeschooling their children instead of sending them to school is illegal. The parents received a letter from the San Benito Unified School District.

"Under California Law, a home school is not a private school, nor is it a lawful alternative to public school ..." the school district told the parents, according to an article written by Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) President Mike Smith. Smith said that they wrote a letter back to the school district "explaining that homeschooling is indeed a legal exemption to public school attendance pursuant to the private-school exemption."

Homeschooling Had Been Permitted Before

This notification came even as there had already been a previous court ruling allowing homeschooling which came eight years ago, reported WND. In that instance, the report said that a senior level court in the state of California made the decision that state law allowed parents to homeschool their children as homeschooling is "a species of private education."

The court ruling allowing homeschooling California reportedly came after the court first ruled the homeschooling cannot be permitted under state law. WND said that after they broke the story on the ruling unfavorable to homeschooling, homeschool advocates asked the court to reconsider their decision and the court heeded their plea.

Homeschooling Issue In France

One News Now reported that parents in France who homeschool their children are not happy about new homeschooling restrictions in the country. The homeschooling issue pertains to an amendment in the Education Code of France adopted by the National Assembly.

"While an annual inspection of homeschooled students was previously required, Article L. 131 of the Education Code now specifies that families no longer have a say in the location or manner of the inspection," HSLDA Director of Global Outreach Mike Donnelly was quoted as saying. Donnelly said that different homeschooling groups in France have come together and made petitions against the amendment to the Education Code.
