Special Needs News: Bag Designed By Teenager With Autism Sold Out After Singaporean PM's Wife Brings It To The White House

A bag designed by a teenager with autism has sold out after the wife of Singapore's prime minister used it in a state visit to the United States last week. The blue pouch bag is printed with white dinosaurs, which the teenager with autism has a passion for.

Ho Ching was seen carrying the bag with her in the White House when she and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong were welcomed there by United States President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The dinosaur print was the creation of 19-year-old See Toh Sheng Jie.

According to a report from ABC.net, Ho Ching is an advisor to Autism Resource Center in Singapore, and she bought the bag in the center's fundraising event. Sheng Jie is a student in the Pathlight school for students with autism, which the Autism Resource Center runs. The school has a merchandise arm called The Art Faculty, which sells creations of students.

"When the school first told us that Ms Ho Ching brought Sheng Jie's pouch to the White House, we thought it was a joke," said Sheng Jie's father, as per the report. Sheng Jie was shown the picture of Ho Ching carrying the bag he designed and he was said to be happy about it.

After Ho Ching was seen carrying Shieng Jie's creation, it took less than a day for all 200 pieces of the bag, sold at $ 14.80 in Singaporean dollars, to be sold out when it usually takes about four months, reported Free Malaysia Today. Sheng Jie's art is also said to have reached popularity only in Singapore, but is being displayed in the United States as well.

Today reported that while Sheng Jie has been drawing dinosaurs for the last 16 years and that despite his autism, he is able to completely focus on dinosaurs. Sheng Jie's father said that his son has been interested in dinosaurs since he was three, after watching a Disney movie about them.
