Girls Camp Initiated By LAFD Encourages Attendees To Become Firefighters

Teen girls can be heroes too. Age does not matter when it comes to offering the self to serve other people. This is one of the reasons why LAFD Holds First 'Girls Camp'

The camp aims to inspire teens to pursue firefighting and chase opportunities to save lives. The teen girls who attended the camp were provided with knowledge and training to basically equip them for firefighting and emergency services, through a two-day camp at the Fire Department Academy in Terminal Island.

LA Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas expressed his idea that women can contribute a lot in saving lives. Three percent of LA Fire Department are composed of females. It is a little number but surely women in this department have great contributions. LA Fire Department has one of the highest number of women firefighters in the country.

Firefighting is not an easy job as it needs physical leanness, courage, intellect and high emotional quotient. Seeing people on the brink of deadly situations or even death is not basically a fun thing to do. Firefighters are also exposed to risks like burns, falls, and even cancer because of the exposure to hazardous fumes. According to a research, some figures are misleading for the fatality rates of firefighters in contrast to that of law enforcers. There are around 1.1 million firefighters in the U.S. and not all of them are working full-time as around two-thirds of this number are volunteers, who are not usually included in the statistics of fatalities. The actual chance of dying in the line of duty is one out of 10,377 based on the 2013 study. One out of 6,153 is the chance of dying for the cops.

The staff of the camp were very eager to see girls wanting to say "I will be a firefighter" inspite of the danger that they would discover and further understand. They are willing to pass on the passion to save lives by putting their lives at stake as well.
