'True Detective' Season 3 Premiere, News & Update: Rust Cohle Returns With New Writers & A Potential 2018 Release?

HBO is not done with "True Detective" despite conflicting reports. The crime drama, which debuted on the cable network in 2014 to rave reviews, is still up for a third season. Only, there will be changes and some delays. Matthew McConaughey, who played Rust Cohle in the first season, also expressed he's willing to revisit the role.

HBO executive Casey Bloys proclaimed that the cable network is open to doing "True Detective" Season 3. "It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead," he confirmed via Entertainment Weekly.

However, as to when "True Detective" Season 3 will happen will depend on show creator Nic Pizzolatto. As it stands, with Pizzolatto is set to do a different project for HBO with Robert Downey Jr. But the network said that they are willing to work with new writers for "True Detective" and have Pizzolatto supervising them instead.

But HBO is not rushing into "True Detective" Season 3 just yet as the cable network made this mistake with the second season, which tanked with viewers and critics. Vanity Fair reports that HBO president Michael Lombardo admitted the network's fault when it forced Nic Pizzolatto to create a follow up faster, so they won't be doing this for the third season.

Unofficial reports indicate that should "True Detective" Season 3 happen, then it could start rolling by 2018. Since it is an anthology series, continuity is actually not going to be a problem. This is one of the show's advantage as "True Detective" stories are different every season.

However, Matthew McConaughey, who starred in "True Detective" Season 1 and won awards for his portrayal of Rust Cohle, hinted that he's open to doing the show again. He admitted during a TV interview that he misses playing the character and "watching him on Sunday nights" when the show aired on HBO. "I was a happy man when I made that [show] for six months," per another Vanity Fair report.
