Zooey Deschanel Parenting Style: 'New Girl' Star Talks No Sugar, No Screen Time For 1-Year-Old Elsie

As a mom to a growing toddler, "New Girl" star Zooey Deschanel revealed that she has no strict rules for her daughter just yet. However, she is quite conscious of introducing a few things to her first-born, such as sugar and screen time. Her daughter, Elsie Otter, with husband Jacob Pechenik, is only 13 months old.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel's show, Zooey Deschanel happily tells the story of how Elsie celebrated her first birthday recently. The actress said that they didn't have any grand party, but she did bake her a cake, which had mashed bananas instead of sugar. "I'm making this cake just so she can smash it," the actress said, per People. However, after giving it a taste, Elsie was not at all interested in smashing nor eating it. "I should've given her a cheesecake," Zooey Deschanel joked.

The actress said that she hasn't been giving Elsie sugar all that much, but she won't deprive her child of this, eventually. Only Elsie is at this stage where even a little sugar already makes her hyper, so that's off the table for now.

Zooey Deschanel believes her child is still "so little" so rules aren't consciously a must. But she admits to limiting her daughter's screen time the way her parents did when she was little. "My baby steals my phone from me, and I don't really want her to be doing that," she told Jimmy.

Elsie already knows so many things, such as pretending to talk on the phone and asking for cheese from her mother in the middle of the night. The 1-year-old also knows how to speak many words. "My husband taught her how to say cheese just 'cause she likes cheese so much," the actress said, per Page Six.

Zooey Deschanel announced that she was pregnant with her first child in January 2015. Then, in June of the same year, she secretly married Jacob in hush-hush affair. Elsie arrived in August also of that same year, per Us Weekly.
