‘Persona 5’ Gameplay Latest News & Update: PS3 Screenshots Released, Last-Gen Optimization Shown With PS4 Comparison

A host of new images for the upcoming entry in the "Persona" subseries of the Megami Tensei franchise, "Persona 5," was recently released; this time including screenshots of the game's version for the previous generation PlayStation 3 console which shows that the game will still perform well on an older machine.

DualShockers released the images, with Gamespot incorporating them in comparison mode with a slider to adjust which version, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3, can be seen. Comparing the screenshots bit by bit, it can be seen that there are barely any differences between the two on the most basic level at a first glance.

Upon taking a closer look, the differences between the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of "Persona 5" are marginal and negligible at best. The most apparent difference the PlayStation 3 version has is a slightly darker tone, which is most apparent in the screenshots of the protagonist standing in the crowded and brightly lit market district.

The PlayStation 4 screenshots of "Persona 5" overall look sharper, with more detail in the characters' hair and the meshes and textures of the clothes. Aside from that and the aforementioned slightly darker tone, the lighting and the look of the shadows are virtually similar.

All in all, the screenshots show that the PlayStation 3 version of "Persona 5" will feature a strong performance and is at least close to par with that of the PlayStation 4 version. This could be attributed to the fact that "Persona 5" is pretty much a Playstation 3 game at its core.

Atlus began developing the title back in the late 2000's, as a follow up to 2008's "Persona 4" which was released for the PlayStation 2. Due to a number of other concurrent projects, like the puzzle platformer "Catherine," development on "Persona 5" got extended by a number of years until two console generations arrived after its predecessor. Though by the time the PlayStation 4 was released and "Persona 5" developers began building for that platform as well, it was already late in the game's development.

More than the above, this means that those who want to play "Persona 5" but only have the PlayStation 3 and not the PlayStation 4 will not have to suffer any downgrades to their playing experience. Truly great news for any "Persona" fan.

"Persona 5" will release in Japan on Sept. 15, with a release to the rest of the world following on Valentine's Day February 14, 2017.
