‘Supernatural’ Season 12 News, Updates & Spoilers: Upcoming ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ Episode To Have ‘Spinal Tap’ Similarities

Rock 'n' roll is a huge staple on "Supernatural." It is evident in the long-running series' theme song, "Carry On My Wayward Son" by Kansas, and viewers often see Dean and Sam riding in the trusty Impala listening to good ol' rock 'n' roll songs, so it makes sense that the twelfth season of "Supernatural" will feature an episode based around that music genre.

"Supernatural" showrunner Andrew Dabb told Entertainment Weekly that the creative team has been attempting to incorporate rock 'n' roll into the show for so long now, and it seems to be coming to its full fruition in season 12. "[It] seems like such a natural thing to do an episode based around rock 'n' roll," Dabb told the news outlet.

The "Supernatural" showrunner continued, "That is the tenor of the show. It's something we've played with off and on, but it's something that always felt a little bit bigger than one episode because it is such a big part of our show."

Dabb said that the opportunity to do a rock 'n' roll episode fully presented itself when "Supernatural" cast rock star Rick Springfield as Lucifer's new vessel named Vince Vicente. The upcoming episodes featuring Springfield's Lucifer felt "really fun and like a natural evolution" for "Supernatural."

He added that the Lucifer episodes have some of the elements of rock music mockumentary "Spinal Tap" in it, which showcased the "sleazy behind-the-scenes music business of it all." The fallen angel was previously portrayed by Mark Pellegrino and Misha Collins (albeit briefly) in the "Supernatural" series.

"Supernatural" cast Castiel (Collins) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) will join forces -- which will be similar to a '70s sitcom or '80s buddy cop comedy -- to hunt Lucifer. Castiel is seeking vengeance on God's former favorite son for inhabiting his vessel, while Crowley wants to take the King of Hell title back, which he can't do with Lucifer out of his cage, Parent Herald previously reported.

Castiel will be different in "Supernatural" Season 12. Collins told EW that the angel will be "closer to full power than we have seen him" in years. However, he will be "a little bit of jerk" and is going to be "short-tempered."

Dabb and "Supernatural" executive producer Robert Singer told EW that they are careful to not recycle storylines to keep viewers' interest. Dabb revealed that they encourage writers to watch plenty of material or to delve into their personal experiences as inspirations behind Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam's (Jared Padalecki) journey.

"Supernatural" Season 12 premieres on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 9 PM ET on The CW. Watch a sneak peek below.
