Verizon to Filter Google OS System Updates to Google's Pixel Phone

While Google's Pixel phones will be receiving direct Android OS updates from Google itself, Pixel phones bought from network-carrier Verizon won't be getting the perks of having an OS boost right away.

According to TechCrunch, system updates from Verizon models of the Pixel phone will be managed by Verizon. The updates will be subject to Verizon's internal software certification process before being given to consumers.

While Verizon sells the Pixel phone as a "Verizon exclusive" product, consumers will still be able to buy a Pixel phone directly from Google. The Google-bought Pixel phone will be unlocked for use in other networks and will be able to receive updates directly from the company, says Computerworld.

Google will also be providing important security updates for both the Google-bought and Verizon-branded versions of the Pixel Phone. This means that even the Verizon-branded Pixel phone won't be delayed in receiving the latest security features of Google.

According to Computerworld, while there will be no difference in the Pixel phone bought from Google and from Verizon in terms of hardware, Verizon offers a more expensive device protection plan than Google.

The Pixel phone is Google's first shot at hardware development, entering the market of smartphone manufacturing where smartphone giants like Apple and Samsung are on the top of the industry.

Google's Pixel phone comes in two sizes: the regular 5-inch Pixel, and the 5.5-inch Pixel XL. Both devices come with a 12.3 Megapixel camera, glass-aluminum body, a fingerprint sensor, a battery with 7-hours of battery life, vibrant AMOLED screen and Android Nougat's latest 7.1 OS version, according to CNET.

The Pixel phone also comes with Google Assistant, Google's virtual assistant much like Apple's Siri. The Pixel phone is the first mobile device that would have Google assistant built-in.
