2015 FIFA Women's World Cup: USA Advances to Finals, Beats Germany 2-0

The United States has just secured a place in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup as the team bested No.1 Germany in the semi-finals on June 30. 

The US Women's National Soccer Team defeated Germany in the second half of the match. According to Yahoo! Sports, Carli Lloyd was the key to Team USA's success. After a scuffle between a German defender and forward Alex Morgan, Lloyd made a penalty kick against Germany's Nadine Angerer. Later on Kelley O'Hara scored a late goal for the United States and beat favored Germany two goals to none. 

Per Oregon Live, the highlights of how the play went down is found below:

  • 84th minute: GOAL! Kelley O'Hara scores after Carli Lloyd taps a pass off to her in the box. The USA now leads top-ranked Germany 2-0 and is on the cusp of earning a berth to the Women's World Cup final. 
  • 69th minute: GOAL! Alex Morgan is taken down right at the edge of the box and the referee calls for a penalty kick. Replays appear to show that the foul occurred outside the box. USA midfielder Carli Lloyd steps up to the spot and sends the PK into the net as Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer dives the other way.The USA leads Germany 1-0.

In terms of ranking, Germany has been shutting down opponents left and right. Hollywood Life recalls how the team made an example out of the Ivory Coast with a 10-0 win and also put up impressive scores with Thailand (4-0) and Sweden (4-1), to name a few. While Team USA hasn't been scoring as many goals, they did defeat other contenders that include Australia (3-1) as well as other teams, Nigeria, Columbia, and China, to make it to the semis. 

The United States last won the World Cup in 1999 and will play for the title on Sunday, 7 p.m. ET. They'll be facing who ever wins in the Japan/ England match to be held on Wednesday. Currently, Japan is ranked fourth while England is ranked sixth. 

Whoever wins the match will be crowned the 2015 Women's World Cup Champion.
