Parenting Teens: Should Teenagers Be Compelled To Do Jobs?

It is often a tough decision for parents to allow their teenage children to work when they are still studying or in school. But one answer cannot fit on everyone because each child has different needs and it totally depends on the situation of the each family.

Different circumstances create different decisions in this regard. A teenager belonging to a family that has trouble making ends meet, might be compelled to do a job irrespective of whether anyone forces him or not.

One can make decision by deciding together and by discussing it with each other. One thing that is most important and that everyone should keep in their mind is that the main goal of the child is to complete his or her education and having job while still in shcool is not the main goal.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 50 percent of American teenagers hold informal jobs. These jobs includes babysitting and yard work, and are done by kids who are 12. A lot of kids do job so that they can manage their expenses on their own. Unfortunately, some of them do it so that they do not have to study.

If a child is doing a job so that he or she do not get to study then a parent should not let a child work and talk this issue through. The Center for Parenting Education post also says that the main and the most important job for a teenager to do is to complete his education.

There is no harm in working if a child has its priority straight. Working can give them a lot of experiences and can also train them for their future. But if they did not set their priorities right, then they are the ones who have to face some problems in the future. After all, it depends on the nature and the thinking of the child that whether it is good for them to do a job while they are still getting their education.
