Stanford Rape Case Update: Sexual Assault Survivor Is Glamour's Woman Of The Year

The Stanford rape case has been a hot issue especially after the former student, Brock Turner, who did the sexual assault on an unidentified young woman was sentenced to only six months in jail plus three years of probation. Due to the strong words of the unidentified victim, who was referred to only as Emily Doe, she has been named by Glamour magazine as their Woman of the Year.

Emily Doe, now 23 years old, was sexually assaulted behind a dumpster by Brock Turner last year inside the Stanford University's California campus. The message of Emily Doe has had more than 11 million views since it was released to the public.

The letter of Emily Doe was so powerful that there have been quotations from her letter being used now. One of the statements penned by the victim read, "You don't know me, but you've been inside me and that's why we're here today. You took away my worth." The Washington Post reported that BuzzFeed News published the letter of Emily Doe which was 12 pages in length.

Glamour magazine said in a statement that they are choosing Emily Doe as their receiver of the Woman of the Year award because within four days, her statement was read aloud on platforms like CNN and the Congress. Rape hotlines also were ringing off the hook as volunteers called to offer help. Also, the statement of Emily Doe closed the gap regarding lighter sentences given to attackers when the victim is unconscious or severely intoxicated, The Christian Science Monitor reported.

Emily Doe also penned an essay for Glamour magazine and she talked about the supportive emails she has been receiving as well as the many gifts she got from strangers. She also talked about the letter from Vice President Joe Biden.

Aside from those, Emily Doe talked about feeling embarrassed after Brock Turner's sentence was read. She said that the violation of her body amounted to the judge releasing Brock Turner back to his life in Ohio. She said that Judge Aaron Persky, the one who handed down the sentence, muted the word justice and made women think that they have to be more sober, more civil, more upright and must wear more layers of clothing. She said that if this is the message being sent, the United States will go nowhere.

At the time of the incident, Brock Turner was tackled and stopped by two graduates of Stanford University who happened to pass by while they were riding their bicycles. What are your thoughts about Emily Doe's rape case? Sound off below and follow Parent Herald for more news updates.
