Live-Action "Beauty and the Beast" Adaptation Updates: Character Belle’s Backstory Revealed; Still Photos of the Film Released, Emma Watson Meets the Beast

Entertainment Weekly just released a beastly amount of new still photos from Disney's live-action "Beauty and the Beast” adaptation showing definitive proof that Emma Watson really is the living, breathing version of Belle. In one image, the “Harry Potter” star wears a slightly tweaked version of the very distinct yellow dress that the soon-to-be princess wears during the iconic ballroom scene from the classic animated movie.

It looks like the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” adaptation will have a lot in common with the animated film, but Emma Watson told Entertainment Weekly that her Belle will be given a feminist twist. Instead of going out and about on the countryside, complaining about her provincial life, Belle will be spending some of her free time inventing contraptions that make life in her little village easier.

In the animated “Beauty and the Beast” film, Maurice, Belle's father, played by Kevin Kline in the live-action film, is the inventor in the family. Emma Watson thought that it would be fun to put that quirky career choice for Belle so that her character becomes a little more fleshed-out. It also helps explain how Belle can spend so much time with her nose buried in books.

Emma goes on to say that there wasn't very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle wasn't fitting in, other than liking books. "We created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented some kind of washing machine," she said. "Instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So yeah, we made Belle an inventor."

Belle seemingly gets her ability to create machines from her father. In the live-action "Beauty and the Beast" adaptation, Maurice makes beautiful music boxes.

"Beauty and the Beast" fans are going absolutely crazy for Emma Watson's look in the new movie. On one hand, they aren't so happy about Dan Stevens' Beast. They stated that "so ugly he looks he's from Pan's Labyrinth." But it should be noted that the Beast isn't supposed to be beautiful. The curse put by the witch on the spoiled royal made sure his outward appearance was as rotten as he was inside.

You can check out the retelling of a romantic tale as old as time when Disney's live-action "Beauty and the Beast" adaptation hits theaters on March 17, 2017.
