'Top Gun 2' Cast & Release Date: Tom Cruise Dishes Sequel Plot, Says Playing Maverick Again 'Would Be Fun'

Tom Cruise, 53, received one of his biggest breaks as a box-office movie star back in the 1980s with the film "Top Gun." Now, the "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" star revealed that he is on board the planned sequel, according to Reuters.

"It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets," the actor said to Reuters.

The sequel was confirmed to be in development last month by Skydance CEO David Ellison, the film's producer, according to Variety. While Cruise, who played Maverick, the F-14 fighter pilot in the first film, made the press rounds for the premiere of his latest movie, he also revealed some of his big ideas for the sequel.

"We've got to do all the jets practical. No CGI on the jets. I remember when I did the first one, I said 'Look, in my contract I had to have three flights in the F-14.' And it had to be in the film, a shot from that. So we had to film it. And luckily they wanted me bad enough to do it, so I was able to do that. I'm saying right now - no CGI on the jets," he told Extra in an interview.

Of course, back then, CGI technology was not a familiar factor in film-making, yet even with his latest films, Cruise was always game for doing his own dangerous stunts, E! Online reported.

Reviving "Top Gun" has been in the drawing board for many years, according to Cinema Blend and any plans for the sequel will have to have Tom Cruise involved, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "There is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison told the news outlet.

Justice Marks has been tapped to write the screenplay for "Top Gun 2" and it will still revolve around fighter pilots in the present day. Unmanned drones will form part of the story, too, says producer Jerry Bruckheimer in a report from Huffington Post. "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," he told the news outlet.

As for Tom's wish to keep the stunts as authentic as possible, Ellison told THR that while there will be special effects, the actor will be "100 percent going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically."

All they have to figure out to get this sequel's filming underway is to squeeze it into Cruise's busy schedule. No release date for the film has been set so far.
