'Star Wars' Villain Gets Own Comic Book Series; Darth Maul Miniseries Chronicles Sith Life Before 'Phantom Menace'

Darth Maul is back from the dead. Despite being killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi in the movie, Darth Maul will take center stage in his own prequel series, which will chronicle events before "The Phantom Menace", and will show Darth Maul as an apprentice Sith.

IGN reports that the series will be titled "Star Wars: Darth Maul" and will be illustrated and penned by Luke Ross and Cullen Bunn. It will show a young Maul training under the tutelage of Darth Sidious. The prequel will also feature a new character, Eldra Kaitis, who is young Jedi Padawan that was kidnapped by a crime lord. Maul takes an interest in Eldra Kaitis and will try to bring the character to the dark side.

Bunn said that the young Padawan will make an impression on Darth Maul, and might have even tempted the Sith apprentice to step away from the dark side. Although everyone knows that this will ultimately fail, it will still be interesting to see the descent of Darth Maul to the dark side.

Fans of "Star Wars" and readers of the miniseries should expect Darth Maul to have a union of his appearance and character in "The Phantom Menace" as well as in both the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels" animated series. Having a prequel for Darth Maul is a step into the trend of the "Star Wars" franchise to delve into origin stories, such as "Rogue One".

One thing that fans should not expect in the Darth Maul comic book miniseries is an appearance of another villain in the "Star Wars" universe, Darth Vader. Being that it is a prequel, Darth Vader would still be Anakin Skywalker in the "Star Wars" universe, reports New York Daily News. There is no definite date of release but fans should expect "Star Wars: Darth Maul" early 2017.
