Why UK Government Investigates Gradual Closures Of School Libraries

Libraries are the biggest source of knowledge, all sorts of information can be acquired through countless books in libraries. However, over the past few years, libraries are being neglected more than they were ever before.

According to The Guardian, UK laureate Chris Riddell tried to raise this issue in an open letter to the Government. It was stated in the letter that reading is not properly encouraged and proper funding is always unavailable in this regard. It was also pointed out that many libraries are shuttled down due to unsuitable conditions and members leaving the School Library Association (SLA) on account of insufficient funds.

Education Echo Chamber Uncut reported the request was made to the education board as the matter is only at their hands. Another disadvantageous aspect of the arisen situation is the library lottery. In order to put an end to such system, a proper budget should be assigned to provide books in libraries where children can choose the book they like to read.

Libraries are one of the most important school platforms for children that encourage gaining more and more knowledge especially because buying every book desirable to be read is impossible. When children borrow books from libraries to their homes, it not only serves as a medium of knowledge but it also enhances the literature understanding.

Since a shortage of funds can make things worse, making libraries a priority in school should be on the agenda of the education department so that even if a reform is gradual, it will start and fully equipped libraries will be a part of every school. Every child should be able to read whenever feasible whether it's for academic purposes, personal interest, research or pleasure. The target can only be acquired if a library is accessible to every child.
