Baby Names 2015: 'Game of Thrones' Characters Inspire Parents in Wales and England

The success of HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones" has been undeniable and its popularity among parents is visible in the growing number of babies with names taken from the TV series' characters.

According to The Independent, the influence of "Game of Thrones" on baby names is evident, with infants like Daenerys, Sansa, Theon and Tyrion welcomed into the world in England and Wales.

The report suggests that the popular fantasy drama TV series has made its mark in the television for its graphic violence and adult scenes, which may not be a good source of inspiration for couples. However, there is an increase in the use of the characters' name since it was first aired in 2011.

According to the report, 18 babies were named after Theon, 17 were named Tyrion, 14 Bran and 4 were Sandor, a new entry, in 2014. As for the girls, 53 babies were named Khaleesi, 9 Daenerys, 6 Sansa, 244 Arya and 4 were named Brienne, a new entry.

In a report from The Guardian, parents were asked why they named their children from the "Game of Thrones" characters, and their responses made sense. Alice-Caraline McAdams, 23, from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, named her first daughter Freya, inspired from the character of the role-playing game "World of Warcraft" and the figure in Norse mythology. She intends to follow the same theme on her subsequent children, but eventually changed her mind and opted for a name from one of the characters in "Game of Thrones."

"I was watching Game of Thrones," the expectant mom said. "... and I was listening to Cersei talking to Tommen about how she would do anything to make her children happy. She would burn cities to the ground, and I was like, 'It sounds like me!' I didn't like the name Cersei, but I liked the name Arya."

McAdams stressed that she loves Arya Stark's character and even explained, "She's so feisty and just a lone ranger, in a way... When I read the books, she's not just a Stark. She's her own person. She's also a completely different person compared to the other Starks. She decides her role. She's not a gender, really. And I think that's really inspiring."

The gender of McAdams baby is still unknown as she is still in her first term of pregnancy. She is due in February. If in case, the child is a boy, she wants to name the baby "Kit" after the crowd favorite character Kit Harrington.
