Virtual Reality Technology Changing How Students Learn? Technological Developments Lead To Workplace Inequality

Virtual reality technology can now change the way teachers deliver their lessons to students and this could help them better understand what the matter is all about. Amid this new breakthrough in education, another study claims that education can't keep up with technological advances, which could lead to inequality in the workplace.

The Conversation reported that virtual reality technology or augmented reality is now used by teachers as a tool to take students (via the use of digital representations) to areas or locations that cannot be physically visited. The example cited was in the field of medicine, where the subjects regarding medicine or medical procedures are better presented if students would see the subject matter with their own eyes instead of relying on what are written in the textbooks.

One of the programs developed with the use of virtual reality technology is called Second Life and it lets teachers design their virtual world, which can be accessed by 100 students. One of the virtual worlds created is a series of activities showing the Chinese language and the culture of Chinese people shown to students in Australia before they became exchange students in the Asian country.

The publication listed a number of benefits of using virtual reality technology and it includes allowing students to revisit the lessons for better understanding. Virtual reality technology also lets students engage in social interaction since they share the same virtual world.

In relation to this, there is also a downside as Economist reported that technological advances create inequality in the workplace. The publication states that innovations continue to arrive but workers suffer because not only are they falling behind with the developments but they could also be replaced since automation in factories and offices has become an increasing fad.

People also need to keep on learning in order to acquire new skills fit for their careers and are demanded by technological developments. With that said, what do you think about virtual reality and other technological advances? Let us know in the comments!
