Baby Matters Recalls Recliners after Five Infant Deaths

Baby Matters LLC, manufacturer of recliners, has recalled its foam rubber Nap Nanny and Nap Nanny Chill infant models after five baby deaths were reportedly linked to these recliners.

As part of a settlement with Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) the company decided to recall its baby recliners after the U.S. agency dropped an administrative complaint against Baby Matters LLC filed in December 2012.

CPSC claimed that four babies died in the Nap Nanny Generation Two recliners and one infant died in the Chill model.

The agency further said that they received 92 cases of babies hanging or falling over the side of the recliners. They requested people not to buy these products and said that the company was no longer involved in the business and declined to accept the returns of the recliners.

Between 2009 and 2012, nearly 165,000 Nap Nanny and Chill recliners were sold for $130 each.

By the end of 2012 online stores such as Amazon.com Inc, Buy Buy Baby Inc, Diapers.com and Toys RUs/Babies R Us voluntarily recalled Nap Nanny and Chill products.

The CPSC said that people who bought these recliners from any of these online stores should contact the retailers for refund.

The agency said that despite improvements in design, warnings and instructions to the company's Generation Tow model and Nap Nanny Chill recliner, four babies died.

"CPSC urges other consumers to immediately dispose of the products to ensure that they are not used again," the statement said.
