3 Most Common Health Emergencies: Find Out How To Handle It And When To Call 911

Emergencies can happen anywhere, even in your own home. But do you know what to do when an emergency strikes?

The basic step is to call 911 right away, William Walters, MD, an emergency medicine specialist at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia said to WebMd. He said people involved should call the emergency team right away.

However, Lara Zibners, M.D., a pediatric ER doctor and author of "If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be OK: How to Know if Your Child's Injury or Illness Is Really an Emergency" said to Parenting when your child gets to an accident and the injuries or condition is not life threatening, then no need to call 911. Instead, call your pediatrician, so he can decide if your child needs to go to a hospital or not.

And to help parents handle some of the common health emergencies, Dr. Zibners listed some of the common kids emergencies. She also gave some advised on how to handle them.

When your child knocks her tooth loose.

Dr. Zibners said no need to head to ER for this type of accident. Call a dentist instead. However, she said if you can't find the tooth of your child and you notice that your child is wheezing, then call 911 right away or rush your child to the nearest hospital.

Another child bites your kid and your child's skin is broken.

You should wash the wound immediately with warm water and soap. Then, see your pediatrician, so he can examine how it looks and may decide whether your child needs an emergency treatment or not.

If your child was stung by a bee.

Dr. Zibners said if your child is allergic or showing any signs of allergic reactions like swelling of the face, difficulty of breathing or dizziness, then head to the ER right away. But if your child is not allergic, parents can treat the child by themselves, she said.
