Many people all around the globe suffer from heartburn. There are about 60 million Americans who go through heartburn at least in a month. Heartburn is painful as if you are having a heart attack. This form of chest pain could trigger other cardiovascular conditions, which is why it is best to avoid food that could induce heartburn.

Why It Occurs

WebMD states that heartburn is a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), which is also known as acid indigestion. It occurs when the acid rises from the stomach into the esophagus. This creates a burning sensation in your throat and chest.

Foods and Heartburn

According to the National Heartburn Alliance (NHBA), 92 percent of people with heartburn said that food is the main cause of their acid indigestion. It is advisable then that you observe a diet that would not trigger heartburn or one that can reduce its symptoms. Health shares the following food to avoid for people with heartburn:

1.  Chocolate

Chocolate is bad for people with heartburn. It has ingredients such as theobromine and high fats that cause acid reflux.

2.  Fried Food

Oils can trigger reflux. This also refers to foods that are fried wherein it uses oil. These include fried chicken/buffalo wings, potato fries and fried meat. These are mostly related with heartburn.

3.  High-Fat Meats

High-fat meats such as lamb, pork and beef may take a time to digest and stay longer in the stomach. This causes the acid to rise in the esophagus.

4.  Caffeine

Coffee or tea can trigger acid reflux. Avoid drinking beverages instead drink plenty of water.

5.  Tomatoes

Tomatoes have many health benefits but they can make heartburn worse. It is advisable then not to eat fresh tomatoes and foods with tomato sauce.

6.  High-Fat Dairy Products

Give up eating food that are rich in fat such as cheese and butter. It is better to eat food that are low in fat.

7.  Soda and Alcohol

Soda, alcohol and carbonated beverages are the main causes of heartburn. These beverages undergo bubbles carbonation that grows in the stomach and increases the pressures that initiate reflux. Avoid drinking these acidic beverages.
