Computer Usage Lowers Social Isolation In Old Age People: Study

The older generation is finding new ways to keep itself busy. A recent developmental study reveals that usage of technology by the elderly helps them lead a better social life.

The researchers at Wichita State University, Kansas, explored the pros and cons of the usage of technology (access to computer) in old people. The researchers based their findings on a survey made in 2012 where the researchers interviewed senior citizens receiving home and community-based services.

The senior citizens were queried about their computer usage, access to social websites and their friend circles. The participants were also shown a demonstration of a new software that would make the computers more user-friendly for them.

The results showed that seniors who used computers more frequently were less socially isolated and had a more active social life. Eighty five percent of people surveyed expressed their desire to use computers and 25 percent admitted to using computers regularly. 42 percent of the elderly were found to be socially isolated, which could trigger physical or mental health problems later.

"I think it has the potential to reduce isolation and loneliness," said Louis Medvene, who led the study, in a press release."You have poorer outcomes in terms of physical health and also mental health if you're socially isolated."

However, the researchers are not clear to what extent computer usage can help the old people come out of their isolation. Medvene stresses that further interventions are required to determine to how much impact computer usage has on the elderly.

"What Dr. Medvene is working on right now is to promote the use of new technology among older adults," said Rui Ni, assistant professor of psychology, in a statement.

An earlier study has shown that old people active on social media sites are more mentally alert and healthy. They tend to seek and exchange views with people from different age groups on these sites.
