'Doctor Strange' Cast, News & Update: 'Star Trek' Star George Takei Criticizes Marvel For Whitewashing The Ancient One, A Tibetan Character

The upcoming Marvel film, "Doctor Strange" features an interesting story of a surgeon turned sorcerer. Many are hopeful that the film will be a hit. However, according to reports not everyone was impressed with "Doctor Strange," especially about the casting of The Ancient One.

George Takei On The 'Doctor Strange' Controversy

The "Star Trek" actor, George Takei did not agree with the casting of Tilda Swinton for the role of The Ancient One in "Doctor Strange". The Ancient One is a traditional Tibetan character and having Swinton played the role "whitewashed" the character.

George Takei turned to Facebook and rant about his observation in the "Doctor Strange" casting. "So let me get this straight. You cast a white actress so you wouldn't hurt sales...in Asia? This backpedaling is nearly as cringeworthy as the casting. Marvel must think we're all idiots," Takei wrote.

Per the Guardian, Takei is a regular critic of Hollywood's habit of sidelining East Asian actors in favor of white performers. Takei felt that the Ancient One is a racist stereotype and that Tilda was cast because white audiences want to see a white actor.

Marvel's Response To Takei's Complaint In 'Doctor Strange' Casting

Marvel Studio explained to Mashable that Marvel has a strong record of diversity when it comes to casting. "The Ancient One is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic. We are very proud to have the enormously talented Tilda Swinton portray this unique and complex character alongside our richly diverse cast," Marvel Studio said.

However, no matter what Marvel say, Takei is a strong believer that Asians have a limited opportunity in Hollywood and that Asian roles are assigned to white actors. "Until that mindset can change, and the studios do something to stop this practice (Remember The Last Airbender? Aloha?) I will continue to speak out," Takei said.

"Doctor Strange" will hit the big screens on Nov. 4, 2016.
