'Game Of Thrones' Season 6 SPOILERS: Did George R.R. Martin Confirm The Truth About Hodor To 'ASOIAF' Fan 2 Years Ago?

The fifth episode of "Game of Thrones" Season 6 has effectively left fans reeling in despair when it was finally revealed why Hodor only says "Hodor." The last moments of "The Door" may have confirmed that Bran Stark is one of the most important characters in "Game of Thrones," but did George R.R. Martin actually admit the truth about Hodor to a fan of "A Song of Ice and Fire" back in 2014?

George R.R. Martin And The Elevator Encounter

According to Kotaku, the author of "The Winds of Winter" kept running into a fan named Michael A. Ventrella during a convention back in 2014. The fan decided to write about his experience with George R.R. Martin, sharing his exchange with the ASOIAF writer in an elevator where they discussed Hodor's case. Ventrella told George R.R. Martin that he had "figured out" why the "Game of Thrones" creator, who had once joked about becoming an elevator operator, created Hodor.

"It's clear to me now that 'Hodor' is short for 'Hold the door,'" Ventrella wrote in his blog. His statement was met with laughter from George R.R. Martin, who somehow confirmed that he was close, but no cigar.

"You don't know how close to the truth you are!" George R.R. Martin had laughed, and the Hodor exchange was forgotten by the rest of the world. That is until the last gut-wrenching scene in "Game of Thrones" Season 6 Episode 5.

"Game Of Thrones" Producers React To The Truth About Hodor

Viewers had their mind blown when Hodor's secret was revealed in "Game Of Thrones" Season 6 Episode 5, and David Benioff pretty much had the same reaction when George R.R. Martin told them why Hodor only says "Hodor." In a featurette for "The Door," David Benioff shared how he and D.B. Weiss found out the truth from George R.R. Martin himself (via GamesRadar).

"Probably the most shocking revelation [George R.R. Martin] had for us was when he told us the origin of Hodor, or how that name came about," Benioff stated. "I just remember [D.B. Weiss] and I looking at each other when he said that and just being like, 'Holy s-t!'"

"Game of Thrones" Season 6 is expected to have more shocking revelations about Bran Stark, who had been responsible for breaking Hodor's mind in the past. Will Bran Stark continue to affect characters in his time-traveling trips? "Game of Thrones" Season 6 airs on HBO every Sunday nights.
