NBA News: Mo Williams Confirmed His Retirement; Cavaliers Ready To Re-Sign J.R. Smith? Norris Cole To Replace Williams

Mo Williams confirmed his retirement and will not be playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. Williams informed GM David Griffin last Monday that he will be retiring and will not continue his NBA career.

Mo Williams NBA journey has now come and will become a part of the Cleveland Cavaliers' history. In a report held by the ESPN, Mo Williams' agent called the Cavaliers GM David Griffin to announce his retirement.

It seemed that Mo Williams planned to retire before the NBA training camp as he didn't fly with the Cavaliers to Santa Barbara as the cleveland.com reported. LeBron James invited the Cavs to have a mini-camp before the official NBA training camp begins.

Though David Griffin did not disclose if the Cavaliers would opt to buy out his retirement, it has come to speculate that the retirement of Mo Williams will increase the initial offer of the Cavaliers to J.R. Smith. If a buyout would materialize, the Cavaliers will now have another $2 that can be spent to acquire a veteran player or it may be used to add on the initial deal offered to J.R. Smith.

J.R. Smith also didn't attend to the Cavaliers' mini-camp. That is due to the fact that he and the Cavaliers haven't reach to any agreement that makes Smith still hangs in the NBA free agent pool.

Many believed that J.R. Smith and the Cleveland Cavaliers would come up to an agreement that will lead Smith to re-sign with the team. This may come up with the same scenario happened to Anderson Varejao and Tristan Thompson, where both of them didn't attend the training camp, yet they were able to sign with the team before the official NBA season starts.

On the other hand, as per CBS Sports reported, Mo Williams' retirement will leave Kay Felder and Jordan McRae the opportunity to be in the Cavaliers' regular rotation. There are also rumors before Williams announced his retirement that the Cavaliers might acquire Norris Cole. Since the backup guard position is now vacant, this might increase the probability that Norris Cole could reunite with LeBron James.
