Autism Awareness: Get A Glimpse On Theo Palmer's Views On Autism

Theo Palmer, Ph.D. of Stanford opened up about autism as he shares his insights as to what autism is and what are the possible factors that place the individual at risk. During an interview, Palmer did not only discuss autism in a nutshell, but he also gave out details in regards to his team's take on autism and its treatment.

In a one-on-one interview with The Scope, Stanford researcher Theo Palmer, Ph.D., discussed autism spectrum disorder, its treatment, and the risk factors. It was revealed that autism is not only one disability but a series of disabilities that are being put together to form the condition.

Palmer also opened up about the genes that are affecting or contributing to the development of autism. It was revealed that there are minimal numbers of single genes that can possibly cause autism. It was then mentioned that around 500 genes that would act together can lead to autism.

Theo Palmer and his team of researchers were then asked about the autism risk factors that they focused on. Palmer proceeded in explaining that children, whose mothers were admitted to a hospital in a span of her pregnancy due to illnesses or infection during the early stages of gestation care, are more prone to developing autism.

Palmer was also asked as to what are the implications their work has in relation to their patients. Palmer then explained that their study paved the way into giving them a clearer understanding when it comes to neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders.

"The value from the medical perspective is that you might be able to genotype moms and say, 'You're at particularly high risk from this environmental factor," Palmer stated. "Then we can either try to avoid exposure or use drugs to prevent or lessen the effects"
