'The Walking Dead' Negan Prequel: Villain's Backstory Has TV Potential? What Robert Kirkman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan Say

Could TV's most hated villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) be getting a backstory on "The Walking Dead'? The show's executive producer, Robert Kirkman, talks about the possibilities in an exclusive interview and the actor playing him has chimed in.

A prequel regarding Negan on "The Walking Dead" was actually published in the comic books just this April and has already spanned six stories so far in "Here's Negan." Thus, the show has a wealth of materials to explore the character's life that it could even spinoff as its own TV show from "The Walking Dead."

A Negan prequel on "The Walking Dead" would give more context to the character, says Robert Kirkman in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan with a burning fury of a thousand suns and I would love to see him tell that story and see the character go through those paces," the producer said.

Before the zombie apocalypse on "The Walking Dead," Negan was actually married and worked as a coach in high school. Negan comes to learn that his wife has cancer and so, riddled with guilt, he comes clean to her about having an affair.

His wife, however, becomes upset that he picks her over someone who could live longer. Then the zombie outbreak happens on "The Walking Dead" and Negan watches as his wife, Lucille, becomes an undead.

As with Rick in "The Walking Dead," Negan is first appalled to realize that in order to survive, he has to kill the undead and he just can't do this to Lucille. Negan's backstory in the comics is still developing, with Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard as creators, according to iO9.

Robert Kirkman said that for now, they have not devised a plan for Negan's backstory on "The Walking Dead," as they still don't know how long Negan would be written in the series. "But if we do get to that point, it'd be nice to see that story adapted," he said.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is aware that there is plenty of material for his character on "The Walking Dead" and he would welcome the chance to work on this, if that ever happens. "It would be fun to do a prequel to who Negan was," he said, per Entertainment Weekly. Learn more about Negan in this video below.
