New York City Marathon Parade of Nations Safe With NYPD K-9; Units Deployed to Patrol the Area Ensuring Safety of Participants

It is the first time to have a police dog, largely K-9, to back up the security during the rehearsal in Central Park Thursday for the Parade of Nations of the TCS New York City Marathon. The security really for this specific event really amped-up to ensure no disruptions will take place during the said event.

Eyewitness News reported that officer Matthew Gullo made a comment about K-9 Maddy. Maddy is Gullo's greatest partner that he ever had. "Maddy is vapor wake explosive detection K-9," Gullo added. Maddy has been trained to sniff explosives that are not only static but also on the motion if someone was carrying them around.

Dogs have been used for law enforcement since the Middle Ages. It was recorded in France that dogs were used since the 14th century in St. Malo, while bloodhounds were used in Scotland, commonly known as "slough dogs."

In 19th-century London, there was an increase in public concern regarding growing lawlessness, which was a problem that was far too great to be dealt with by common existing law enforcement at the time. As a result, many private associations were created to help combat serious crimes. Night watchmen were to guard premises. They were provided with firearms and dogs to protect themselves from the horrible criminals.

According to the Casebook: Jack The Ripper, one of the first attempts using dogs to aid police was during the detection and apprehension of Sir Charles Warren in 1869 by the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police of London, who repeatedly meet failures at identifying and apprehending the serial killer Jack the Ripper.

In 1908, Britain Police was the first to use police dogs to put a stop to theft from the docks in Hull. By 1910, railway police forces were experimenting with other breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, and German Shepherds.

Back to Maddy, she is named after Officer Madeline Carlo, who died in 2007 of lung cancer that she contracted after inhaling toxins from the 9/11 terrorist attack. Meanwhile, the others K-9 were named after other fallen officers.
