'Beauty And The Beast' Turns Belle Into An Inventor?, Emma Watson Confirms Feminist Twist

The enthralling Emma Watson made into Entertainment Weekly’s cover on Wednesday. More snaps of the live-action film “Beauty and the Beast” characters including Belle, Gaston, and Maurice were released two days after.

The photo showed Emma Watson, dressed in a stunning yellow ball gown, spun and twirled around the marble-floored ballroom. The 26-year old British actress, Emma, replicates Belle’s style by wearing her hair in a loose half ponytail.

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” may be a tale as old as time but that does not stop gender politics to be impending. According to reports, Emma’s feminist views are visible in her role as Belle. Emma confirmed the feminist twist in an interview. In the animated movie “Beauty and the Beast”, there was no proper backstory for Belle. She just did not fit in because of her fascination with books. Emma Watson shared how they created a story for Belle in the “Beauty and the Beast” remake. The next paragraphs may contain spoilers. If you do not want to find out more about the movie, do not read further. In the live-action film, they made Belle (Emma Watson) invent some kind of washing machine. Instead of spending all her time doing the laundry, Belle could read more books while waiting for the machine to finish the laundry. The “Beauty and the Beast” remake stays true to one element of the original animated film – the close bond between Belle and her father Maurice aka Crazy Old Maurice. According to The Huffington Post, Belle’s father, Maurice, was overprotective of her after they lost Belle’s mother.

Maurice was an inventor; he is making Belle music boxes to somehow stop Belle from traveling. These music boxes signify different countries. Maurice, who will be played by Kevin Kline, made these music boxes so Belle can see what she’s missing.

In another report, Emma Watson’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, revealed how she refused to wear a corset. According to Emma, her character as Belle requires her to be active as Belle is an active princess. She doesn’t want to wear a dress that would constrain her in any way.

Disney has shared to the world a small glimpse of the entire story. The trailer of “Beauty and the Beast” was released early this year.

While waiting for the movie premiere, enjoy watching Entertainment Weekly’s exclusive shots of the Disney live-action remake. “Beauty and the Beast” shows in theaters on March 17, 2017.
