'The Crown' Renewed On Netflix: Claire Foy, Matt Smith Replacements Confirmed? Why Show Is Changing Cast

"The Crown" has already received a renewal on Netflix before the new series launched on the streaming site on Friday, Nov. 4. As subscribers are binge-watching the show, filming for Season 2 has gotten underway in London.

But stars Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, and Matt Smith, who plays the queen's Prince Philip, will not be part of "The Crown" after the second season. This has been the plan for the series all along, as the actors will be replaced, along with many of its cast members, when the new seasons delves on the queen's life in her later years.

According to the show's producer Andrew Eaton, via Digital Spy, recasting on "The Crown" is necessary after Season 2. They will need older actors to play the principal characters to sustain the realism.

As each installment of "The Crown" will tackle the royal family per decade, then the characters would have aged. They will have to realistically pick older actors by the time they do the next seasons. Production believes they will have to recast the principal characters after Season 4 as well.

Eaton insists, however, that they found a gem in Claire Foy from among all the actresses they auditioned for "The Crown" and replacing her is still in discussion. "Everyone fell in love with her and she felt like somebody that you could go on that journey with for that length of time," Eaton said.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail has photos of "The Crown" production for Season 2 at Trafalgar Square, but none of the main actors are in the scene. The next season will be taking place in the '60s and will also put more focus on Prince Philip's family background.

"The Crown" creator Peter Morgan told The Hollywood Reporter that he hopes the real royal family won't give him feedback about the show. "I hope never to never hear what they think of it, because they're entitled to their privacy and to me it's great to have distance and objectivity as well," the award-winning writer said.

"The Crown" is already streaming on Netflix for all of its global subscribers. The show has a total 10 episodes for the first season.
