'Edge of Tomorrow 2' Trailer & Release Date: Sequel In the Works? Plot Pitched By Tom Cruise, 'I’ve Got An Idea For It'

In time for following its Japanese manga-based sequel, "All You Need is Kill," lead actor Tom Cruise spills that there will be a continuation for the movie "Edge of Tomorrow," which hit cinemas a year ago. Cruise says he got an idea for it.

MTV News reports that during the premiere of "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," Tom seems to be persistent in pushing the production of the said sequel, "I pitched it to ["Rogue Nation" director and "Edge of Tomorrow" screenwriter Christopher] McQuarrie and ["Edge of Tomorrow" director] Doug [Liman]. We were there one night and I was like, I've got an idea for it," said Tom.

The said movie was based on a Japanese manga written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, tackling time travel or time loop where Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) meets "Mimics" or aliens who have successfully hit the Earth and are trying to invade the planet. In the movie, Cage tried to face them but was killed. He then lived again 24 hours earlier just to die over and over again, Screen Rant writes.

In the film, Cruise joins co-star Emily Blunt, who plays the character of Rita Vrataski, a J-Squad and UDF war hero who also fights the Mimics. Cruise is thinking of tagging along Blunt in the sequel. "It could be so much fun," he said. "Gotta get Emily. I was like Emily, please. She was like, 'give me another year, please,'" Cruise tells MTV News.

The novel is set in the future where lead characters are designed to live and die again and again by fighting Mimics who want to invade the planet. Keiji Kiriya is the lead character, who is sent out to kill these aliens only to be reborn the next morning until he found a female soldier known as Full Metal Bitch.

While "Edge of Tomorrow" was produced by Warner Bros., the novel itself was published by Viz Media in 2009 in English. Shueshia republished the original novel together with two volumes of the said manga with drawings from "Death Note" artist, Takeshi Obata.

According to Anime News Network, aside from Cruise and Blunt, "Edge of Tomorrow" was also jam-packed with stars such as Charlotte Riley, Kick Gurry, Bill Paxton, Kidus Henok, Tony Way and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

Meanwhile, Cruise already proved he is still one of those nerve-wracking action stars in Hollywood with "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" hitting the cinemas this year.
