‘Pacific Rim 2’ Air Date, News, & Updates: Sequel To Star John Boyega? Filming Has Started For ‘Pacific Rim: Maelstrom’ In Australia

"Pacific Rim 2" has started filming and fans are eagerly awaiting every little bit of news. The sequel to the 2013 sci-fi hit will be helmed by Steven Knight and they are adding another big time actor to the set. Principal photography for "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" has started in Australia.

 Knight teased fans with a tweet where he shows a picture of the clapper with the movie's subtitle. He captioned it with "Day 1 of shooting, the adventure begins... #PacificRim2"

John Boyega, of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," is also included in "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" and has been game about it with an Instagram post showing his script.

The original "Pacific Rim" movie had Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost. People are expecting that he will reprise his role in "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom."

"Pacific Rim" is film about giant alien monsters who arrived on Earth through an inter-dimensional vortex found under the Pacific Ocean. In the original story, the planet was protected from invasion by giant robots called jaegers, with teams of two (or three) piloting in tandem. The movie ended with the rift being closed by these jaegers.

"Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" will most likely continue along this story line, with a different rift, more monsters, and more jaegers. Geek.com comments: "Not only is a maelstrom another name for a whirlpool, but it also signals that it'll be a time of strife for everybody in that universe."

There is little news on "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" storyline or what kind of enemies the heroes of the sequel will be facing. However, considering they were up against a level five kaiju and they had to blow up a rift under the Pacific Ocean, it isn't hard to imagine that "Pacific Rim 2" would be more hard core.

Reports confirmed that Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, and Ivanna Sakhno have all been cast, "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" but no confirmation has been played on the roles or characters they will be playing.

Meanwhile, "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" is scheduled for a February 23, 2018, air date.
