Why A Punishment Approach To Bullying Doesn't Always Work

The problem of bullying among children is not new. Most of the people have met a bully at some point in their lives. Usually, parents worry that their children become the victim of a bully at school.

It is often a surprise for parents to discover that their child is influenced by bullying so much that he himself has become a bully. As sad as it is to discover this behavior, parents must remain calm and deal with the situation without any aggression.

As parents, it is best to talk to the child about bullying behavior. Try to find out what is causing a child to act like a bully. The Safe Child Program warns parents to avoid using guilt when talking to a child. Instead, focus on what the feelings experienced by the child when dealing with others.

According to Stevens Point Journal, jealousy, insecurity, social pressure and not know that bullying is bad are some of the possible causes of this attitude. So, parents should educate a child about how bullying affects the victim.

Making a bully stand in the victim's shoes makes a child empathetic towards the victim. He then understands, how it feels like to be bullied. According to Psychology Today, the way parents behave is a model of what is acceptable behavior for their child.

If parents use violence, they yell at people or make fun of others without rest, then a child will think it is okay to do the same. So, treat others with respect and show compassion and patience in dealing with people in your life.

Parents ought to establish basic rules for a child to follow regarding behavior toward others. Parents should let a child know that they will not accept bullying behavior and will enforce penalties if such behavior continues. However, avoid violent punishments such as flogging, which could exacerbate bullying. Sticking to punishments such as taking away privileges is proven to be much more effective against bullies.
