‘The Leftovers’ Season 3 Release Date Still In Limbo: April 2017 Air Date, Airtime On HBO Predicted

HBO still hasn't announced an official release date for "The Leftovers" Season 3. The drama series' Season 2 aired its final episode in December 2015.

HBO has gotten around to announcing when its other programs will come back but the same thing hasn't happened to "The Leftovers" Season 3. For instance, "Girls" Season 6, the series' final season, will premiere on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 10 PM EST while "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" will return on the same day at 11 PM. Pete Holmes' "Crashing," meanwhile, premieres on Dec. 19 at 10:30 PM EST, CarterMatt reported.

But what about "The Leftovers" Season 3? CarterMatt predicted that the show could have a 9 PM EST airtime on HBO. However, other programs in lineup should also be taken into consideration such as "Big Little Lies" starring Reese Witherspoon.

"The Leftovers" Season 3 is the series' last, with filming already wrapped in September in Melbourne, Australia according to the show's official Twitter account. The series finale was a decision rooted on the creative side and not because it was canceled by HBO, HBO Binge reported.

However, it should also be noted that "The Leftovers" doesn't have a stable audience. The show won a Peabody award but there weren't any more major recognition aside from that, HBO Binge added.

"The Leftovers" can be too serious, gloomy, and hard to watch. Those factors are ingredients for compelling drama but can also be the reasons why audiences aren't drawn to it. Regardless, "The Leftovers" Season 3, which has eight episodes, is expected to premiere sometime in 2017 and there are speculations that it would air in April, Indiewire reported.

"The Leftovers" creator Damon Lindelof said that Season 3 will be the series' "definitive end," in the sense that it will be "wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional" as what the show is "destined to be," according to Den of Geek. Season 3 will see the return of lead stars Justin Theroux (Kevin Garvey) and Carrie Coon (Nora Durst), with Amy Brenneman (Jill), Christopher Eccleston (Matt), Liv Tyler (Meg), Margaret Qualley (Jill), Chris Zylka (Tom), and Janel Moloney (Mary) reprising their supporting roles, TVLine listed.

"The Leftovers" Season 2's Murphy clan comprised of Regina King (Erika), Kevin Carroll (John), Jovan Adepo (Michael), and Jasmin Savoy-Brown (Evie) are returning for Season 3, too. Scott Glenn is also reprising his role as Kevin's father.
