4K-Resolution Expected To Dominate CES 2017; Samsung To Introduce New Smart TV Services

From smartphones to virtual reality headsets, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas will be a showcase of the coolest up and coming gadgets. One device, however, is expected to dominate CES 2017 and draw in large crowds to its booths: television.

Top TV brands like LG, Samsung, and Sony are anticipated to be talks of the town during the electronics extravaganza at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Jan. 5 to 9, 2017. Smaller but equally competitive brands such as Hisense, LeEco, and TCL will make waves, too.

Brands will likely show off television units with 4K resolution, and the non-4K ones will be very rare at CES 2017, CNET reports. 4K-resolution TVs have four times as many pixels as the standard 1080p TVs and are no longer as expensive to manufacture today as they were in the past. In 2017, all TVs that will be in the market will have 4K resolution, except the cheapest ones.

TV brands are also expected to announce their products that can support high dynamic range or HDR content, which expands the color and contrast range of TV images significantly, according to CNET. There's also OLED technology, of which LG is the only the mass manufacturer so far, but which Samsung is also determined to produce.

Speaking of Samsung, the South Korean firm announced that it will launch three new Smart TV services at CES 2017. The services are Sports, Music, and TV Plus, Business Wire reports.

The Sports service of Samsung Smart TVs will give viewers information about which teams are playing a game, where they can watch it, and the scores in one navigation page. The Music service can search and identify songs played on live TV, as well as make song recommendations. Finally, TV Plus offers audiences a selection of internet protocol-based channels with premium content, so that they no longer have to avail of cable services to watch their favorite shows.
