'Downward Dog' Comedy With Allison Tolman Gets Sundance Preview Before Midseason Premiere On ABC

"Downward Dog" started off as a web series but it will soon get the TV treatment when it premieres on ABC this midseason. The network hasn't given a confirmed air date for the show just yet, but it will be getting an advanced preview this January at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that "Downward Dog" is part of the festival events that will take place on Sunday, Jan. 22 and Tuesday, Jan. 24. Four episodes of the comedy series will be screened to the audience, which will then be followed with a Q & A panel. Expected to grace the panel are "Downward Dog" creators Samm Hodges and Michael Killen.

This isn't the first screening of "Downward Dog" before its actual debut, though. The show was also presented at the Palm Spring Shortfest last June, according to its official site. The showrunners were also part of a panel interview where the audience learned more about the show's development.

"Downward Dog" was picked up by ABC in May 2016, according to Deadline. It centers on a woman named Nan (Allison Tolman), who adopts a shelter dog she names as Martin (voiced by Hodges) to fill up her lonely life.

The main character is described as a "disorganized, unapologetic woman" via another Deadline report. Nan has an ex-boyfriend, Jason (Lucas Neff), who works as bartender musician. His character is described as a man-child who is trying to woo Nan back.

As Nan teaches Martin to become an obedient dog, she also learns to deal with her problems. According to Huffington Post, Martin as the show's narrator will provide the "introspection" to the series.

"Downward Dog" also stars Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mo Collins and Barry Rothbart. Keep checking back to this site for more news about the show. In the meantime, check out the original web series that inspired it in the video below.
