Why Bringing Back Home Economics To School Will Benefit Students

There are sectors who are calling to bring back Home Economics in schools and make it part of the standard curriculum from elementary to high school. They believe schools exist to equip students with beneficial skills and knowledge. Students and their families are set to benefit if they have a better understanding of how they can apply their academic learnings outside the classroom.

Home Economics could be traced back to 1876 when Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) chemist Ellen Swallow Richards spearheaded the school's Women's Laboratory. Richards focused on applying scientific principles to physical fitness, proper clothing, good nutrition and other domestic topics to make life in the home more efficient. She believed that when the home is kept more efficiently, there is more time for other things like education.

By incorporating Home Economic skills in school, children learn to appreciate its value in real life, according to Huffington Post. Subjects like math and chemisty are just numbers and theories to children. But they can be useful when applied to the grocery store and the kitchen. Kids can apply math when buying groceries or measuring recipes. If schools have a way to make the academic subjects applicable to real life, then it would make the education system better.

People usually think of baking cakes and sewing pajamas when they think of Home Economic, as per QR Code Stickers. But the subject should not only be relegated to these things because it helped prepare students for other professions related to the hotel industry, restaurants and even hospitals.

Home Economics has taught students life skills in family finance, nutrition and cooking as well as textiles, according to Boston Globe. But the subject is more than these three categories because it also teaches communnity service, basic home repair and even child care.

Most children grow up with working mothers and because of ther hectic schedules, these skills are no longer passed on to their children. Bringing back Home Economics to schools will help equip children with these skills they will be needing in life.
