An unsettling incident unfolded at a playground in Massachusetts, where two children sustained burn injuries following an acid attack on the playground slides.
The authorities in Longmeadow, located just south of Springfield, are actively searching for suspects after a call was made to report a suspicious substance found on the slides at Bliss Park Playground.
In a news release on Monday, June 12, the Longmeadow fire department revealed that the material on the slides was determined to be "acidic in nature" after firefighters conducted an examination.
The Acid Attack Left Burn Injuries
The hazmat team, summoned to the scene, identified the chemical poured on the slides as muriatic acid, a commonly used substance for pool cleaning and disinfection.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, muriatic acid, also known as hydrochloric acid, is a key component in various commercial chemicals utilized for tasks such as pool cleaning, refining processes, metal treatment, and the production of numerous products, including dyes, plastics, polymers, and fertilizers.
However, it is crucial to handle it with caution, as direct contact can cause severe burns to the skin and eyes, and its vapors have the potential to harm the respiratory system.
As per NBC News, the young victims, who suffered burn-like injuries, were immediately attended to by Longmeadow EMS crews after leaving the park.
It was discovered that the perpetrators gained access to the acid by breaking into a room in the basement of a pool building.
To reach the chemicals, they climbed two fences and utilized a ventilation shaft for entry. The fire department emphasized that the pool chemicals had been stored appropriately in a secure area.
Authorities suspect that the assailants may have incurred acid burns to their hands or arms, and their clothing might exhibit signs of degradation due to contact with the corrosive substance.
To swiftly apprehend the culprits responsible for this heinous act, multiple agencies, including the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, are collaborating in the ongoing investigation.
The Massachusetts State Police crime lab has gathered various pieces of evidence, some of which have been forwarded for forensic analysis and fingerprinting.
Longmeadow officials have also enlisted the services of a contractor to clean the affected playground area.
