Kids & Gadgets: Experts Debate Screen Time; 5 Reasons Why Gadgets Should Be Banned For Toddlers To Pre-Teens

Modern parenting already involves the use of gadgets like cell phones or iPads, and there are even apps to help moms and dads make parenting seamless. Moreover, these very same gadgets keep the children occupied and many parents don't hesitate to let their kids play with it. In fact, some parents pack the gadgets with interactive games for their kids.

But while experts continue to debate the advantages and disadvantages of screen time in kids, the American Academy of Pediatrics remains firm in their stand that "young children learn best by interacting with people, not screens," they said in a statement. However, according to Common Sense Media, about 38 percent of children below the age of 2 are already familiar with mobile devices.

More recently, Dr. Richard Laurie, an early childhood expert, declared that giving young kids iPads before they are teenagers is like, "playing Russian roulette with their development," according to Cult of Mac.

Below are five other reasons to consider banning gadget use from toddlers to pre-teens:

1. By having no gadgets, kids will be able to pursue other interests that will be crucial to their development and learning. Arguably, gadgets can be tools for learning, too, but then again, it comes with a lot of distractions like games or the internet.

2. Kids are fast learners and the sooner they are exposed to gadgets, they will want more of it. This feeds into commercialism early on, as the children will eventually outgrow the gadgets they have and aspire for the latest, when they don't need fancy stuff just yet. "It seems that the arrogance of modern technology (together with ruthless commercialism) knows no bounds. On the basis of what I've argued here, giving iPads to babies is tantamount to child abuse," Dr. Laurie argued, according to The Sun.

3. Kids will be able to make friends and social interactions in the real sense if there are no gadgets for facetime, text and chats. They have to hone their social skills as children so that they are better equipped to handle situations as adults.

4. Banning devices teaches children not to be dependent on technology. While technology is the future, their life skills don't depend on the gadgets alone.

5.  Without gadgets, kids are not exposed to the dangers lurking on the internet. Many kids have already fallen victims to this, especially since they are too young to know any better. Parents won't be able to supervise the children's gadget use all the time, so it's better to have none of this at all.
