The 2021 American Girl Doll of the Year Is Protecting Wildlife Sanctuary

Every year, the American Girl releases a doll of the year. Each year, the chosen doll has a nice back story to tell.

Usually, the chosen doll of the year tends to be topical, unlike the usual historical dolls of American Girl.

For this year, the American Girl Doll of the Year is named Kira. She is ten years old, and is helping her family protect the Australian wildlife sanctuary which was threatened by wildfires last year.

These wildfires devastated almost 1/5 of the forests in the entire Australia.

Who is Kira?

According to Parents.com, Kira is a character in the novel Kira Down Under. This book was written by Erin Teagan.

The main character, who is also the inspiration for this year's American Girl Doll of the year, Kira, spends her summer in Australia. There, she visited her great aunts.

Kira also met a girl named Alexis, who eventually became her friend. 

Both Kira and Alexis took care of injured and orphaned animals. They took care of animals like koalas in the sanctuary and vet clinic of her aunts in Queensland.

While Kira was still in Australia, she encountered a destructive bushfire.

The American Girl Doll of the year

As part of the Kira line, the doll is accompanied by a nonfiction book entitled, Love the Earth. This book is intended to help kids, who are ages eight and above, to understand climate change. Also, the book has tips that are helpful for those who would like to live a more earth-friendly life.

American Girl partners with Australian Wildfire Charity WIRES

Australian Wildfire Charity WIRES is an organization that is helping in dealing with what has been lost during the bushfires that happened last year in the Australian forests.

The bushfires last year damaged almost 1/5 of the forests in Australia.

As part of American Girl's initiative, they have pledged to match the donations of customers to WIRES up to 25,000 US Dollars.

Aside from the doll of the year

If your little ones are interested in having the Kira doll, there are also additional toys which can be purchased like Kira's platform and tent camp site. Kira's book is also available in the American Girl website. Kids may also watch the adventure of the doll of the year on YouTube.

Dolls of the Years 2020 and 2019

In 2019, American Girl also released a doll of the year. The 2019 doll was named Blaire. She is a girl from a family that owns a farm-to-table restaurant. 

The 2020 doll is named Joss. She is an athlete, who despite having a disability was still very competitive. Joss wore a hearing aid and has a service dog with her.
