When it comes to celebrations such as birthdays, it really is the thought that counts - but, let's be honest, we all enjoy partying the day away. Hosting a party during lockdown can be just as special as regular parties, all you need to do is make some adjustments and get creative. Here are a few ways you can change things up to make a lockdown birthday extra fun, regardless of if you're celebrating with your household or organising your own virtual get-together.

Set a theme

Know a glam fan, or perhaps they love all things spooky? Either way, setting a theme is a way of adding some fun to the event, even if you are in lockdown. Regardless of whether the celebration is happening virtually or just with your household, everyone can dress up, get on a Zoom call and celebrate the night away. There are plenty of fancy dress options to choose from, or you could just go super formal and choose a black-tie theme.

Get decorating

Whether you're jazzing up the place for your sister, a housemate or celebrating your own birthday, decorating the space is a must. This doesn't have to cost a fortune, either, as there are a plethora of DIY options that require affordable supplies.

Get some coloured paper, balloons, tassels, streamers as well as buying some printer ink online to print out online decorations and templates to transform your home into a party paradise.

Go all out on their favourite snacks

One of the best parts of any birthday party has to be the food, so don't be afraid to go all out and make this the focus. If you know that they love all things sweet, then a candy buffet is the way to go. Easy to set up while still looking cute, fill up mason jars and bowls with some sweet treats and place them around the birthday cake.

You can do the same with savoury snacks, such as popcorn, salted nuts and roasted chickpeas, although you may want to add some larger bowls with the likes of sausage rolls and cheese on crackers too. Either way, they're sure to be delighted by seeing mason jars filled with their favourite treats.

If you don't live in the same household as the person who's birthday it is, why not treat them to a takeaway or snack box? There are a plethora of companies that put together boxes filled with treats, making for a great surprise.

Create some cocktails

What could be better than sipping on ice-cold cocktails while celebrating your birthday? Set up a cocktail making bar featuring a selection of creative ingredients and professional tools. Not only will you get to sip on some delicious drinks, but it's great fun making them. If you're hosting virtual parties, make sure every guest has what they need to make their favourite tipples.

Celebrating a little one's birthday, or perhaps the guest of honour doesn't drink alcohol? Swap this for some tasty mocktails and get them involved in making them.

Getting creative is the key to making any lockdown birthday special. Gather some friends on Zoom, play some party games and tuck into sweet treats to celebrate.
