How To Choose Toiletries That Are Good For The Whole Family

Everyone knows that they need to cut down on the amount of plastic they use. That disposable water bottle on your way to work, the toothbrush that can never be fully recycled, and let's not forget that grubby plastic-filled sponge you use to do your washing up with.

When you sit back and think about it, plastic infects our everyday lives, and it's getting harder and harder to avoid it.

As parents, that's a scary prospect for our children to have to live with.

Changes For Life

There are many plastic-free options coming onto the market these days, from traditional glass bottle milk to canvas shopping bags. However, the bathroom is still one of those areas where plastic accumulates, and usually, the bathroom bin doesn't get emptied into the recycling and goes straight to the landfill.

It's time to break up with plastic and invest in good plastic-free alternatives, and here are five you should be trying in your home.

Plastic Free Bath Bombs

Plastic-free bath products don't have to mean scent or fun-free bath products! The Shark Attack bath bomb from Simply Soaperior is proof of that!

Bath bombs are usually sold without any additional plastic (although some companies will wrap them in cellophane), and they will reduce your bubble bath bottle consumption by 100%.

Go Back To Hard Soap

Another way to reduce your plastic bottle use in the bathroom is to go back to using traditional hard soap rather than a bottle of shower gel.

Hard soaps come in all kinds of scents, and they're usually a lot cheaper than expensive liquid bath soap too. As an added bonus, they actually last longer.

So, you're spending less, saving the planet, and getting more uses out of your soap. What more could you ask for?

Invest In Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

Shampoo bottles and conditioner bottles litter every bathroom, and sadly they litter the sea and beaches too because they've found their way out of landfills and into the waterways.

Break this habit today by finding a shampoo bar your hair loves (warning: this may take some trial and error) and a conditioner bar that leaves your hair soft and silky.

Top tip: Warm the conditioner bar in a cup of warm water before use, and use it on really wet hair. Comb the bar through your hair and leave for a minute before washing it out.

Switch To A Bamboo or Wheat Straw Toothbrush

Bamboo toothbrushes can be found everywhere, but they are too big for some people to use. If this is you, then try a wheat straw toothbrush instead. Wheat straw can biodegrade perfectly happy in your compost heap.

Always go for natural fiber bristled over plastic ones too.

Change To Traditional Safety Razors

Switching to a traditional metal safety razor and changeable blades will help you to save plastic, and seeing as over 2 billion plastic razors are discarded in the US every year, doing your bit will make a difference.
