'Outlander' Star Caitriona Balfe Shocks Fans With First Baby Reveal

Caitriona Balfe has become a new mom to a baby boy, and her fans had no idea she was pregnant this whole time. "The Outlander" actress made a surprising announcement on her social media, saying that she was absent on the platform for some time because she was enjoying "cooking up this little human."

Balfe, 41, didn't provide more details about the baby's birth nor her son's name. She only showed her baby's tiny hand in the photo and wrote that she's in awe of her newborn son, whose father is Tony McGill, a producer.

While Balfe said that she's grateful to give birth to her son in peace and safety, the actress ended her Instagram post by encouraging her followers to donate to charities for children amid the problems of the world.

When Did Caitriona Balfe Give Birth?

Until last June, the Irish actress was filming the sixth season of "Outlander" with co-star Sam Heughan. According to The Scotsman, she was likely concealing her pregnancy under her costumes in the period drama series.

Balfe has always kept her private life under wraps and even managed to have a secret wedding ceremony in 2019 between her work on her highly successful TV show. She and McGill were able to "squeeze in" their wedding one day during the production.

Balfe revealed that they didn't have a grand wedding in an interview, but it was still the most beautiful ceremony because she had her "very close family and friends." She and McGill were also quietly dating for two years before they decided to tie the knot.

However, fans of the show have been dreaming that Balfe would end up in real life with Heughan because of their remarkable chemistry on the screen. Her co-star, however, was one of the first people to congratulate the happy family on the arrival of their new addition. Heughan posted his wonderful sentiment in Balfe's comments.

Outlander Beyond Balfe's Pregnancy

Now that "Outlander" has wrapped up filming the sixth season, Balfe can have more time with her newborn and experience the baby's milestones. Work on season 6 was shorter than usual due to the pandemic's production risks, but the new season is expected to launch in 2022 after it goes through post-production for at least six months.

The series has received a seventh season renewal from Starz in March 2021, but it's still unclear when work on the new season will start as the cast and crew have been used to several months of break in-between seasons.

Balfe could also likely mark her first directorial job in season 7, as she has previously expressed that this was something she wanted to do for some time. However, now that she's a mom, the actress' priorities might have changed.

The actress' baby announcement comes as Heughan recently marked the anniversary of the show's premiere seven years ago by posting several throwback photos. Balfe also joined in and shared one of her old pictures during production.

Outlander is an adaptation of the novels from Diana Gabaldon. Season 6 is based on "A Breath of Snow and Ashes," which is also the sixth book of the series, centering on the disharmony between the inhabitants of colonial America.
