Raising children is one of the most challenging yet fulfilling jobs. But, it is also a job that parents might feel the least prepared to do. Here are child-rearing tips to help moms and dads feel more fulfilled as a parent.

Parents should boost their child's self-esteem

Children start developing their sense of self as babies when they see themselves through the eyes of their parents. The tone of voice, body language, and every expression that parents exude are absorbed by their children, according to Kids Health. The actions and words of a parent affect the child's developing self-esteem more than anything else.

Praising their accomplishments, however small they are, will make the children feel proud. Letting them do things independently will make the kids feel strong and capable. By contrast, parents making belittling comments or comparing a kid unfavorably with another will make their children feel worthless.

Parents should compliment their kids more instead of criticizing them

There are times that parents react negatively to their children. Parents find themselves criticizing their kids far more often than complimenting them. The more effective approach is for parents to catch their children doing something right.

Parents should make statements encouraging good behavior in their children rather than repeatedly scolding them. According to the parenting website raisingchildren.net.au, parents need to find something to praise their kids daily. Be generous in giving kids rewards, such as hugs, love, and compliments whenever they do something good.

Parents should make time for their children

It is often difficult nowadays for parents and children to get together for a family meal, let alone spend quality time together, but there is probably nothing the young ones would like more. Parents should take some time for their kids.

They should get up 10 minutes earlier in the morning to eat breakfast with their kids or leave the dishes in the sink and take a walk with their children after dinner. Children not getting the much-needed attention they want from their mom or dad often act out or display poor behavior because they are sure to be noticed that way.

Parents need to create a special night each week for the family to spend some quality time with their children, according to NAEYC. Parents should let their kids decide how to spend that time together to make them feel special.

When it comes to teen children, parents should do their best to be available when they express a desire to talk or participate in family activities, as these windows of opportunity are fewer when they are already adolescents.

Parents should become good role models to their kids

Parents should be good role models to their young children as they learn a lot about how to act by watching their mom and dad. The younger the kids are, the more cues they take from their parents. Parents should be aware that their children are constantly watching them.

Parents need to model the traits they wish to see in their children, such as being respectful, friendly, honest, and kind. Parents should treat their kids the way they expect other people to treat them.
