'Castle' Season 8 Episode Spoilers: Castle, Beckett Getting Divorced? Show's Bosses Clarify Split [Details]

At the end of "Castle's" episode on Sept. 28, Beckett (played by Stana Katic) decided to take a break from everything. Overwhelmed with emotions in relation to what she discovered in yet another connection to her mother's death, Becket announced she was leaving Castle (played by Nathan Fillion) and he's wondering if they will be able to save their marriage.

The dramatic decision to separate Beckett and Castle in the show has been a major game changer for "Castle," and some fans are not happy about the twist.  According to Cinema Blend, the show's ratings since the new season started is tanking and the changes may be partly to blame.

"Castle's" new showrunners, Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, explained the changes and their future plans for the show in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"Nobody's getting divorced. They're not splitting up forever," Hawley said. "As a couple they've been together and happy for several seasons now. For us we thought, 'Let's throw an obstacle in their way."

The showrunners promised that the next following episodes of "Castle" will return to the usual formula. "We are trying to shake things up, but at the same time what we get into starting Monday night is back to the show being as the stand-alone episodes and a sense of hope and fun," said Hawley.

With the third episode rolling this Monday, the showrunners want viewers to give it another chance. "Here's what we're hoping, that the audience sticks around long enough to see next week and realize that this is just the beginning," said Hawley via Us Weekly.

"Last season, Beckett tried to be the happy wife and great detective, but what the case that launches this season did is make her realize that there's something a little 'broken' inside of her. Hopefully by solving this, she will come face to face with what she needs to get out of it," added Winter.

Hawley and Winter clarified that Beckett and Castle are still going to be working together, but in finding herself, Beckett will be living away from her husband for the time being. The showrunners also said that they wanted to give the show's eighth year a new feel. "For us, it's re-energized the writers room, it's re-energized us. When you take away the safety rope, it gets a little exciting. That's what it was about."
