A 5-year-old was killed by a gunshot and an 8-year-old was severely injured while at the North Houston intersection early Sunday.

A vehicle driven by a woman stopped at an intersection while headed northbound on Northborough with her kids sitting in the back seat.

Police officers received multiple phone calls before one in the morning regarding a shooting in the 13300 block of Northborough Drive, per Fox News .

The mother of the victims immediately left the location upon realizing her children were shot and took them to the hospital.

Victims of a Possible Drive-by Shooting

A drive-by shooting is an incident when someone fires a gun from a vehicle at another vehicle, stationary objects, structure, and person. This is a subset of general gun violence and is usually more common than incidents where someone approaches another on foot and fires at a certain person. This kind of shooting commonly involves multiple suspects and victims. By using a vehicle, suspects find it easy to approach the intended target without being noticed and will quickly speed away before anyone reacts.

Houston Police Assistant Chief Chandra Hatcher said that a 5-year-old was shot and died of the injuries while the 8-year-old victim was also shot and is expected to make a full recovery.

"It is unclear if the complainants were the intended targets of the shooting or if there was something else going on in this area at the time,"

"We do not know a motive. We do not have suspect descriptions other than potentially two Black males in a dark-colored vehicle. We are looking for surveillance footage out here and are gathering evidence." She added

About 15 minutes after responding to the scene, police received another phone call regarding two children arriving at a hospital with gunshot wounds, Click2Houston reported.

Shooting at an Intersection, Under Investigation

Hatcher said that a dark-colored vehicle, possibly with two occupants, was driving westbound on Rush Street, while the victim's and complainant's vehicle was traveling northbound on Northborough.

The occupants of the vehicle driving westbound started discharging a firearm or possibly multiple firearms.

When police arrived at the scene, they did not see any witnesses, suspects, or even the complainants. This is after the mother immediately took her children to the hospital but was too late for one.

According to Daily Cable, descriptions of the suspects and the vehicle that are used in the shooting were not available and cannot be traced.

"We do not know a motive," Hatcher said per ABC News .

Hatcher asks anyone who knows any information regarding the crime that happened in Houston, Texas, to come forward and continue to pray for the family of the child that was killed in the shooting and the injured eight-year-old.

Anyone with information is asked to call Houston police's homicide division at 713-308-3600 or crime stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
