A mom was saved by a neighbor after being shot multiple times by her son following a party on the Fourth of July, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The shooting occurred just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, near 311 Highland Cross in north Harris County.

The suspect's mother was outside celebrating the holiday with her neighbors when her 22-year-old son suddenly showed up after midnight, acting strangely, according to KHOU. The two went into their apartment soon after. Things took a turn for the worse when her son began shooting from the inside with what deputies believed was an AK-47.

Some fired bullets went into an apartment next door where a 16-year-old girl was sitting at a dining table. Luckily, she was not hit. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a dead man and a woman shot multiple times.

Neighbor admits to shooting suspect

Investigators initially thought the man shot himself. But a neighbor admitted shooting the suspect to stop him from killing his mom.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the son stood over his mom and shot her three or four times. He added that was when the good Samaritan took his shot and was able to hit the suspect. The suspect's 58-year-old mother is now out of surgery and is expected to survive.

Gonzalez said that the case would be presented to a Harris County Grand Jury once the investigation is complete. According to investigators, they counted more than 20 bullet holes on one door at an apartment in the 300 block of Highland Cross.

Officials said it is still unclear why the son allegedly targeted his mother. Neighbors said the son was starting to act weird when he showed up.

Investigators believed the son injured his mom when they returned to their apartment as she was reportedly bleeding from her face. That was when the shooting started.

Several firearms found next to the dead son

The mother managed to get out of the apartment at some point. Another neighbor saw what was happening between the mother and son. He grabbed his gun to try and help her, with investigators suggesting the gunfire may have been exchanged between the neighbor and the son. Fortunately, the exchange hit no one else.

Deputies said the mother tried hiding behind a tree, but the suspect found her. Deputies applied two tourniquets to staunch the mother's bleeding before she was taken to the hospital, according to ABC 13. Investigators said two firearms, a pistol, and a semi-automatic rifle, were found on the ground next to the dead son.
