A heartless mom has reportedly been arrested in Russia for selling her newborn baby to pay for a $3,600 nose job. The Daily Star reported that the 33-year-old woman, whose name has not been disclosed by Russian media, was taken into custody in late May by authorities on suspicion of human trafficking.

The mother is said to have given birth to a baby boy at a hospital in the southern city of Kaspiysk on April 25, before selling the infant just five days later to a local couple who wanted to become parents.

According to a statement obtained by Newsflash from Russian officials, the ruthless mom met with a local resident and agreed to hand over her newborn son, who was in a state of helplessness, for a reward of $3,200 USD (200,000 rubles).

Mom waived rights to her son in exchange for cash

She allegedly issued the new parents a waiver for the rights to the boy on the day she handed the child over. She received a small upfront payment of $360 USD in return for that waiver. The woman is believed to have received the rest of the cash less than four weeks later, on May 26, but cops were tipped off a short time later about the illegal activity.

It is still unclear who contacted the police, but the mother was quickly taken into custody, along with the couple who illegally adopted the newborn child, according to the New York Post. The new parents reportedly told investigators that the woman gave them the tot and his birth certificate, but denied paying directly for the baby.

The pair said the mom subsequently asked for $3,200 USD for the cost of a rhinoplasty for better breathing and they were happy to oblige. The mother was pictured posing in a police photo taken after her arrest and it appears she did not manage to have her nose job before cops caught up with her.

The official Russian statement purportedly read that a series of investigative actions is currently being carried out, aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the crime committed and consolidating evidence of the suspect's guilt.

Officials further stated that the mom is suspected of committing a crime under paragraph 'h' of Part 2 of Article 127.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which is the purchase and sale committed in relation to a person who is in a state of helplessness, known to the guilty person.

The woman who paid for the infant was also pictured in a police photo. She can be seen cradling the young child in the snap. It is still unclear what charges she and her partner may be slapped with by police. Meanwhile, officials have not disclosed who is currently caring for the young tot, who is now two months old.
